Sam Fender received the Mercury Prize last month in the North East

The star has handed over the complete sum of his £25k award winnings to the MVT, which functions to save the Britain's small music venues.

Fender was awarded the award on mid-October as his new release his work was named the best record of the previous year.

Fender has opted to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role grassroots venues played in his early career.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the area, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," stated Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have ceased operations – roughly 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Recently, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a small levy to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

He also participated, generating over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to help 38 local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money helped spaces that were facing possible closure due to difficulties stemming from water damage, fires and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and sound issues.

Other venues obtained monetary aid in modernizing facilities and gear that directly benefitted artists and audiences.

"The idea that funds from concerts in major spaces backs the smaller venues, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just sensible," Fender has commented.

Fender is among several artists to donate his award prize money to good deeds.

In Pulp earned the trophy in the mid-90s for their record Different Class, vocalist the singer stated that the act would contribute their prize money to the non-profit War Child.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite shared her bounty across a few charities, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"I also donated a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked new equipment," the artist explained to the media.

In recent years, they donated their winnings to the youth organization that developed their group, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Additionally winners that year they gave their award to a charity for MS after a friend was diagnosed the condition.

"The victory was quite enough," said singer the singer. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the honor. So our victory impacted somebody else's life."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved several local spots in south-east England, by bringing them into local control.

One venue in the city and the other in Bristol were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is backed by a national body and supporters who acquire "stakes" in the venues.
