Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, following the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
